'Pizza Pope' to appear on NBC's 'Today Show' Saturday


Neapolitan pizza fans can see famed pizzaiolo and Jersey Shore native Anthony Mangieri in action Saturday — not at his new restaurant in Atlantic Highlands, which is still under construction, but on NBC's "Today Show"...

"Just finished the walk thru for the morning," Mangieri said in a text message Friday. "It should be fun."

Mangieri, the chef-owner of Una Pizza Napoletana on New York City's Lower East Side, said he will be making pizzas in a wood-fired oven set up on the show's outdoor set at Rockefeller Plaza. The broadcast runs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Mangieri, 47, who grew up in Beachwood, got his start by opening a short-lived traditional Neapolitan bakery in Red Bank in the mid-1990s. He found his true calling when he opened the first Una Pizza Napoletana in a Point Pleasant Beach strip mall in 1996. Inspired by the centuries-old baking traditions of Naples, Italy, the region where his mother's family was from, Mangieri developed a cult following for his obsessive pursuit of Neapolitan pizza perfection, using a traditional wood-fired oven and only a few simple ingredients sourced from the best growers and producers he could find. Perpetually honing his craft, Mangieri moved the restaurant in 2004 to the East Village in Lower Manhattan, where he quickly met with national critical acclaim. Three years later he headed west, launching the third iteration of Una Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco. Mangieri remained in northern California for seven years before returning to New York City and opening a new restaurant a year ago.

Now hailed as one of America's elite pizzaioli, Mangieri is currently busy on his next venture: a new Una Pizza Napoletana nearing completion in downtown Atlantic Highlands.

"My plan was always to end up back in New Jersey and do what I love in the place that I love," Mangieri told the Press in May. He said Friday that the restaurant remains on track to open sometime in August or September.
