Locale Shop 225 Pizzeria – Accredited

"During the week Coeliac Australia announced their most recently accredited restaurant. Shop 225 in Pascoe Vale has Foddies Ratingbeen a favourite amongst the community and now they have recognition...

Located at you guessed it Shop 225 on Melville Road in Pascoe Vale South to be specific. This accreditation is extremely exciting as the shop is a pizzeria.

We all know how risky pizza can be, but with the Coeliac Society Accreditation behind them, we can eat with confidence.

Matt and I walked from Coburg station, however, there is street parking available nearby and the 58 tram stops right outside. They have a lovely dining space with outdoor tables available. Their food is available Monday to Thursday from 5 pm until 9.30pm or 11.30am til 9.30pm on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. If you are gluten free and vegan, don’t stress as they offer both.

Despite it not being marked on the menu, when asked the waitress advised that all the pizzas can be prepared gluten free. They also have gluten free cannoli options and risotto or pasta. None of the salads were marked gluten free either, however, if you ask they can let you know if any of them are suitable.  The pizza prices range from $16 to a gourmet $25 and you’ll need to add $4 for the gluten free base. This is on the higher price range side and may not suit everyone.

I decided to try their most expensive pizza the Il Dottore ($29 for gluten free). This is a blend of cheese, tomato paste, homemade sausage and porcini mushrooms. Matt ordered a non gluten free pizza so we could see the difference in the bases. The gluten free base was really crispy and airy, very similar to the Toscano bases but with that woodfire baked charm. There was a little bit of char on the edges. Matt’s pizza did seem to be puffier and a slightly different colour.

There was a good amount of toppings with nice distribution across the pizza. Every slice had a little bit of everything. The home-made spiced pork sausage was really tangy with a good heat. I probably wouldn’t recommend this if you don’t like spicy. The cheese was creamy, the mushrooms added a fresh tang and it all worked really well together. Thankfully, the base was sturdy and didn’t fall apart when I picked it up either".
